Managing water, preventing crisis
- Someone had said that ‘no matter how much rich you are you can’t live without water’. It is must unfortunate to say that Sikkim lost it’s nearly 91% surface water bodies during the past 25 years’ time. Water uses policy shall be framed to manage preserve and conserve water for future generations.
- All the rivers, rivulets, streams and other water bodies shall be monitored regularly using modern technology.
- There shall have legislation on prevention of polluting natural water system. Polluting water system shall be made a criminal act.
- Our government shall put all efforts to generate water resources by adopting the most effective scientific methods.
- All the citizens of Sikkim shall have access to potable water free of cost. Water conservation committee shall be established at each GPU for ensuring year round water supply to the consumers.
- Rain water harvesting system shall be improved and strengthened for irrigation purpose in the rural areas.
- Water reservoir body shall be constructed in all water scarce villages to provide year round drinking, irrigation, sanitation, fisheries and village tourism purposes.
- Water quality testing labs shall be established in each Sub-Division .Data shall be analyzed and communicated to GPU for ensuring health security.
- Water with diseases/low quality water shall be treated, only treated water shall be provided to the citizens.
- Mass awareness shall be created among the local people for preservation and conservation of water for future generations.
- Water resources management plan shall be prepared for marketing of Sikkim Himalaya water to the world.
